Hesitation, by Dr, Ogi Ressel
Wednesday, June 17th 2009Warm hellos to everyone!
Ok.....let's chat about that "hesitation" thing that we all experience!
It's Sunday morning, my son and I just had breakfast at a nearby
"local" hangout restaurant ( I say local because my community is very
tourist oriented - the local residents almost feel like we should all be
wearing T-shirts that state: "I am NOT a tourist. I am a resident. I live
here," - something like that.
The manager of the restaurant found out that I am a chiropractor and
came out to ask me about his elbow pain. I checked him briefly, told him
about subluxations and referred him to a DC in town - just one of those
things that happen in a small town. I love it!
We hopped back in my red sports car, top down, beautiful sunny day,
and on the way home, I noticed that one of the churches in town was
preparing for a car show in their parking lot. They heard my engine rev up
through the gears and as I slowed down to take a look, they yelled at me to
join them. Apparently, they needed a representative of the Italian stables at
the show. I dropped my son off at home and experienced some hesitation
driving back and having my car on exhibit. And here are some of the things
that went through my head:
•1. Ok....but I really don't know anyone - I'm new in town.
•2. It will be boring
•3. Do I really want to stand out in the hot sun?
•4. Could I tolerate people touching my car?
•5. ...And they are all North American muscle cars - mine is so different.
•6. Yada, yada, yada.
...And all of a sudden I realized that the reason I was hesitant is because of
a little bit of internal fear I was experiencing. Yes, fear. Uncertainty - the prospect
of facing a situation that was new to me - I never participated in car show before.
I decided to go just because of that.
I have to tell you that I had a ball! The church hot dogs were awesome, the other
cars were fabulous, the people I met were welcoming and absolutely wonderful! So
what that there were a few fingerprints on the car, and a smudge or two. No matter!
And that is the reason for this THOT.
Many of us tend to approach life from this perspective - FEAR. It can be crippling.
And it causes us to hesitate. And that hesitation can be the difference between
having the practice of your dreams or what you have at present. The choice is
entirely yours. So, the next time that little internal voice tells you that you shouldn't,
or ought not to, and you catch yourself hesitating, ask yourself this: WHY? Am I
feeling this hesitation because of my own internal uncertainty and fear or is it because
there is some real danger here. And if you find that your own fear is taking over,
then do it with gusto and spizz anyway! Blow it away! Turn that hesitation into an
opportunity!
.....And have a ball doing it!
Warmest wishes,
Dr. Ogi Ressel
